Dermatologist’s Best Winter Skincare Routine for Healthy, Hydrated Skin

well hello my little bog glow Beauties bow and today we’re talking all about winter skincare it is dry out there so today I’m going to be covering my tips how to keep your skin healthy and glowing my favorite products to build out a winter skincare routine that’s just going to keep your skin healthy hydrated glowing all winter long for those of you who don’t know me I am Dr Whitney B I’m a board certified dermatologist I’m a research scientist and I’m also the founder of my own skincare brand Dr Whitney b beauty so

I’m literally living and breathing all things science behind healthy skin so if that’s the kind of content that you guys enjoy be sure to subscribe but let’s Dive Right In so winter is coming as the air gets colder it gets drier and that’s happening outside but then you step inside and your skin is blasted by dry heat so your skin is constantly being surrounded by dry air which is pulling moisture out of your skin it is literally stealing water and moisture out of your skin and that can leave you with dry tight uncomfortable skin rough

patches blotchy red areas sensitive reactive skin so let’s just start with something very basic let’s talk about dry versus dehydrated skin so dry is a skin type you experience it all year round it means that your skin just doesn’t produce enough natural oils so you know if you have dry skin because right after you cleanse your skin if don’t put a moisturizer on within minutes your skin is going to feel really uncomfortable Tight and Dry right but during the winter months dry skin in particular is especially prone to

dehydration dehydration means a lack of water a lack of moisture so actually even oily skin can become dehydrated no matter what your skin type is no matter how many oils you naturally make in your skin dehydration has to do with a loss of water a loss of moisture out your skin and because of the surrounding air being so dry no matter what type of skin you have dry combination oily you can be prone to dehydration so let’s build out our winter skincare routine together now any products that I mentioned I’m going

to link to those below for your convenience so number one very important let’s start with the cleanser now if youve dry skin or if you have normal accommodation or oily skin but you’re using a powerful active like retinoid as part of your skincare routine then you want to switch during the winter a gentle creamy cleanser ideally you want to look for one that’s not going leave the skin feeling tight dry stripped ingredients like ceramides niacinamide those are mus haves okay but it’s also nice to have some calming

soothing peptides a little hyaluronic acid those can make the cleanser a little bit more pricey so they’re nice to have but they’re not must so what do I recommend in terms of avoiding when it comes to a cleanser so I recommend avoiding anything that has the words fragrance or perfum on the ingredient list I recommend avoiding essential oils in a cleanser especially if you have sensitive skin and I recommend avoiding anything that’s going to feel gritty if you rub a cleanser between your fingers and it feels like

sand run or if you see the word like polish I don’t recommend that during the win or either especially if you’re prone to dry sensitive or dehydrated skin now over the years I’ve been gifted some really luxurious premium cleansers but they tend to be loaded with essential oils really heavily fragranced so I’m not going to recommend those you guys today instead we’re going to go with some drugstore options that are tried and true so one of them is L Ro POS this is a hydrating gentle cleanser this retails for like just under $20 and then

we have the vanac cream gentle cleanser this one I think is around $10 now both of these are great in the morning right when you’re just sort of rinsing off the skin care that you applied the night before neither one is really great at removing makeup unfortunately so during the winter months if you’re wearing makeup especially long wear makeup around the eyes then I do recommend starting with some kind of a micellar water like this one by bioderma I think this one’s around $20 it’s not really irritating it’s very gentle I just use

this around my eye area if I’m wearing some eyeliner or a long lasting mascara now before we move on from cleansers I did want to make a quick point about this one because I have recommended this to a couple of my patients over the years who came back to me and said Dr Bo I can’t take the smell and we were saying wait a second so Dr Bo I thought you said go fragrance free but now you’re saying that you know fragrance free is a problem so here’s my take when it comes to fragrance and odors in skinc care of the face okay if you’re using a

Lon product something like a serum moisturizer and you have sensitive skin eczema rosacea reactive skin then I really do say try to go completely fragrance-free you know any kind of a synthetic fragrance or a natural fragrance including a Botanical extract and essential oil unfortunately those can create some irritation for people with sensitive skin especially during the winter months however when it comes to a rinse off product like cleanser if you’re going completely fragrance-free sometimes it’s a very intimate experience you’re adding water

and you can really smell something that you might find very off pudding and it can just make the entire experience not enjoyable right so I am okay with certain what I call masking ingredients that don’t give a very strong smell and also have a very low risk of creating any kind of allergy or irritation in the skin okay so what next winter is the perfect time to add on a dark spot correcting product ideally a serum that contains a combination of tranexamic acid and niacinamide those two ingredients that cocktail is

incredibly effective at brightening dark spots from acne or the sun and winter is the perfect time to work on brightening those dark spots now I love those two ingredients but what do I say to avoid in these kind of products I recommend avoiding dark spot or brightening serums that have glycolic acid in them why because the tranx Amic acid niacinamide cocktail which you’ll find in a bunch of different products out there I’ll recommend to of my favorites in just a second it really works best if you’re using it twice a

day every single day now most people especially with sensitive skin especially during the winter are not going to be able tolerate glycolic acid in a product twice day every single day so I recommend looking for glycolic acid in a separate exfoliating product that you’re only going to be using a couple of times week so two my favorite products for dark spot brightening over the winter are going to be allies of skin and then suitical discoloration defense now these both retail right around $100 a little over $100 um they both have really nice

clinical studies behind them so this is the one by skin ptical it’s actually a very very lightweight serum so this is a good one if you have normal oily combination skin or if you plan on layering other very hydrating ingredients on top or sort of have younger skin that doesn’t need quite as much hydration but I like this one the allies of skin for my more mature patients who need I don’t know if you can see this it’s definitely like a richer kind of more hydrating nourishing quality to it um so that one is a

little bit better for my drier skin patients or my patients with a little bit more mature photo damaged skin okay so the next step in your morning skin cartine is going to be your vitamin C serum and if you’re curious about vitamin C’s I have two videos specifically about vitamin C’s one more about the science behind vitamin C’s other my favorite Roundup of vitamin C serums I’ll link to those below and after that guys the most important step in your winter skin cartine that can literally make or break your skin care routine is going to be

your moisturizer it is the foundation of a good winter skincare routine ingredients you want to look for in your moisturizer are going to be things like camide squealing hyaluronic acid ingredients you want to avoid are going to be fragrance essential oils and you also want to avoid any drying alcohols especially if they’re listed high up in the ingredient list so what are my favorite moisturizers well I’m clearly biased so I personally formulated this with my team Dr wining b beauty it’s our B glow cream so this has sold out twice

since we launched it took me close to 2 years to build this formulation from the ground up with just the highest quality ingredients and if you look at the reviews you know the customers are they all explain it’s very common theme that when they first tried it felt like nothing they had ever experienced before but after they use it for about a week they will not use any other moisturizer it actually dives into the skin it doesn’t just sit on the surface and has been clinically proven to repair the Skin Barrier in 1 hour increase skin

hydration and rebalance the skin microbiome we did extensive clinical studies behind it so we also tested to be non-comedogenic so for those of you who worried about clogging the pores during the winter you know that can probably put your mind at ease as well um this one retails for9 $5 for the full size um but you can actually get the refill and the refill is only $75 okay so what if you have more oily acne prone skin that you notice is getting dehydrated then I recommend going with more of a gel cream formulation I will

definitely list one here that a lot of my patients love okay so you have two choices here as the last step Choice number one is something called an occlusive so this is Vaseline C healing bomb these guys contain the ingredient petrol lotum it’s fully occlusive meaning that if you’re prone to Mila like those little tiny white bumps I wouldn’t recommend using this if you are using an exfoliating acid or a retinoid I wouldn’t use this on top because it can actually drive those actives deeper into the skin and increase your risk for

irritation so the other option is going to be a semi-permeable layer that you can apply on top this one’s called cicaplast bomb B5 it’s by L Ro POS a lighter weight but still semi-occlusive barrier layer that is going to go on top of your moisturizer spot treat only if you have to put it all over you can on those special nights you’re feeling really really dry but what that’s going to do is it’s just going to add that extra protective layer to really help repair the Skin Barrier and seal in that moisture all night long now this one’s

made with an ingredient called dimethicone which does tend to sort of sit on the surface of skin so I wouldn’t go in with this as your Prime primary moisturizer but I do like it as sort of a last final finishing layer if you will and then last but not least no matter how good your skincare is if the air is still really dry then you’re going to want invest in a cool mist humidifier the one that I use in my home is this one by Honeywell again I’ll link to all of these products below but that in a nutshell is winter skincare routine I hope you found it helpful be sure to like And subscribe and I’ll see you next time.
